Active Schools to launch the

'2012 OLYMPIC PASSPORT'

On the 9th January & 8th February the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games will be only 200 days away respectively. There is great excitement surrounding the games not just for those with a sporty mind, but how the games can bring people together as a community and celebrate our achievements.

The Borders Sport & Leisure Trusts Active Schools team have put together the Olympic Passport. The main aim of the passport is to encourage P4-7 aged pupils to go out and try new sports and stay active. The passport will run from when the children receive their passport in January to the Olympics Closing Ceremony on 12th August 2012. Pupils in this age-group will receive their passport along with details of local sports clubs that they can attend to start them off (more clubs will be added to the list). After their first session they will be required to have the club coach sign their passport as evidence of their attendance.

The added incentive of joining a new club is that children will receive points for attending these Olympic sports. The sports are graded based on their accessibility across the Scottish Borders, therefore some may be more accessible here in Berwickshire! An example of the points system for 4 of the sports is shown below. The passports will be handed back into schools for collection. Points will then be added up and children will be awarded medals based on their points total.

One of the priorities of Active Schools is to develop strong school-club links to ensure children are aware of and have the opportunity to continue their involvement in sport. This requires forming strong partnerships with local clubs. The Olympic Passport will strengthen this partnership and increase children’s awareness of the Olympic Games and their involvement in different sports in their local area and thus increase participation.

Berwickshire's Young Ambassadors promote Values

Berwickshire High School's London 2012 Young Ambassadors have been working with Active Schools to promote the Olympic and Paralympic values in primary schools in the Duns cluster. Nicola and Josh have attended assemblies at Swinton, Greenlaw and Chirnside to increase children's awareness of the values that Olympians and Paralympians stand by each day and values that children are encouraged to adopt in school and their daily lives.

Nicola and Josh attended an assembly at Chirnside Primary School on Friday 16th December to present pupils with their certificates for the value of Friendship.

One of the seven values will be focused on each month leading up to the Summer holidays and 1 child from each class will be awarded with a certificate designed by the Young Ambassadors. This will give the children the focus of displaying these values and learn about the importance of adopting them in their daily and sporting life.

Assemblies at Duns, Coldstream and Eccles/Leitholm Primary School are scheduled for after the Christmas holidays.

Greenlaw pupils look forward to Champions visit!

Primary 7 pupils at Greenlaw Primary School are getting excited about the imminent visit of former Olympic swimmer Euan Dale. Euan is visiting the school as part of the Champions in Schools programme that brings a local sporting Champion to inspire the children on their sporting and life achievements. Euan's first visit will be on Tuesday 24th January 2012 and will talk to the pupils about Inspiration and Goal Setting. His second visit will be later in the term where he will focus on Fitness and Nutrition.

 Berwickshire pupils enjoy first

Paralympics of the year

On Wednesday 7th December 10 pupils from Chirnside Support Centre, Greenlaw Primary School and Berwickshire High School attended the first Berwickshire Paralympics Festival. The festival has been re-branded this year to fit in with the upcoming London Paralympics next year. The festival is a great way of giving children the chance to experience activities they would not experience on a regular basis. The festival also allows for skills to be developed and most importantly to promote huge amounts of fun and enjoyment - which was clearly evident at the festival.

The children took part in regular activities Boccia and New Age Kurling and football. The football was delivered by SFA coaches Scott Nightingale and Ross Patterson. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the activities and were supported by school staff as well as senior pupils Hannah Hay and Shonagh Duncan and Berwickshire High Schools's London 2012 Young Ambassadors Josh Herbet and Nicola Wealleans.

A huge thank you must go to all the staff that attended and supported the children, Berwickshire High Schools' PE staff for accommodating the festival, senior pupils Shonagh and Hannah and Young Ambassadors Josh and Nicola. A final thank you and congratulations must got to all the children for attending and taking part.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Paralympics on Wednesday 14th March 2012 and Borders Event in Galashiels later in the year.

Scottish Borders Active Schools has now entered the World of Facebook. Borders Sport & Leisure Trust and its facilities already have pages to update the public on classes and events. With the social networking site forever in the media, it was decided that this would be a great way of keeping those that 'Like' our pages up-to-date with news, events and information in the local area. It will also allow for local clubs who have pages to be informed of Active Schools and local sporting news.

If you have a Facebook page it's easy to find us. In the search box type in 'Scottish Borders Active Schools' and then click 'Like'. For more local news search for Eyemouth Active Schools and/or Duns Active Schools and click 'Like'.
