Primary coordinator Gemma Ross and secondary coordinator Marianne O'Brien are working together to increase opportunities for children in the Earlston cluster to be more physically active and adopt healthier lifestyles. Earlston High School has 8 filter primary schools: Channelkirk, Earlston, Gordon, Lauder, Melrose, Newtown, St Boswells and Westruther. The girls not only want to create new opportunities for Earlston kids to be active through school clubs and holiday programmes, they also want to work with the local community to ensure pathways to local clubs and groups. They do this by inviting local clubs in to run taster sessions and activity blocks within schools, and then directing kids to sessions running within their local clubs. This is a great way to raise awareness of local clubs as well as increase junior memberships. By recruiting volunteer teachers, parents and senior pupils, the coordinators are working to provide wide and varied physical activity opportunities, particularly focusing on hard to reach groups such as adolescent girls and low physical activity groups.
