Hawick Primary Netball Cup 18/1/12 On Wednesday the 18th January 2012, over 60 girls from 7 primary schools throughout the Hawick cluster competed for the Hawick Primary Netball Cup. Organised by Active Schools this was the second year the cup had been played for after a break of nearly six years.
Held at Burnfoot Community School, the seven school teams were split into two pool’s of four and three teams respectively and therefore guaranteed at least three matches each.
Match length was set at four minutes one way and some outstanding, fast paced netball was on show. Particularly impressive was the goal shooting and movement from all the teams. At the end of the twelve pool matches, Trinity PS and Drumlanrig PS progressed as pool winners and Denholm PS and Stirches PS as the two runner up sides.
In the first semi final, played 6 minutes one way, Trinity went head to head with Stirches. Trinity though, proved to have too much for a talented Stirches side and progressed to the final 5-1 winners.
Denholm met Drumlanrig in the second semi final and this proved to be a cracker of a game with pace, movement, agility and teamwork to the fore. At the end of regulation time, defences came out on top and the game finished 1-1. As a result and for the first time we moved into ‘Golden goal’ territory. The atmosphere was tense, yet from the starting centre Denholm scored and squeezed through to the final.
The 2012 final was a repeat of last year’s final contested by Denholm PS and Trinity PS with Denholm looking to retain their title. Both sides had looked strong all afternoon and this showed in a hotly contested match. Play went from end to end but at the final whistle it was Denholm who emerged victorious. Final score: Denholm PS 7 – 1 Trinity PS.
Paul Scott, Hawick primary active schools coordinator stated: “Well done to Denholm PS and to all the girls who took part. The fair play and etiquette shown by all was excellent. A big thank you to everyone involved in helping make the cup such a great spectacle. A special mention must be made to Mrs Storey and Mrs Nichol from Trinity PS who organised and kindly donated silver and gold medals to the finalists.
