Nominate your favourite sports star for Borders Hall of Fame

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is seeking nominations for the Scottish Borders Sporting Hall of Fame which honours Borderers whose names are synonymous with sporting excellence.
Category: General
Posted by: dmartin

The Hall of Fame is a virtual hall based on the sportborders website www.sportborders.org.uk and was launched in November 2005.  Last year saw well known broadcaster Jill Douglas; track and field coach James Curran; hockey ace Diane Renilson and rugby stars Gregor Townsend and Alan Tait added to the prestigious list of individuals already in the Hall of Fame.

Among the selection criteria includes the requirement to have been born, lived or educated in the Scottish Borders.  They must have reached National or International fame in their sport, or made a contribution to the legacy of their sport either nationally or internationally.

Nominations are being accepted until Monday, 3 August 2009.  All nominations received will be presented to a selection panel made up of local sporting personalities, sports historians and SBC officers for consideration.  Those selected will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual James McLean Trust Celebration of Sport Dinner on 21 November 2009 at the Cross Keys Hotel in Kelso.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education Councillor Graham Garvie is keen for people to nominate their favourite sports personalities: “We are a huge sporting community here in the Borders and the hall of fame is a great way of honouring fellow Borderers who have been an inspiration to us all and especially to the next generation of future champions by reaching national and international success.  I would invite members of the public to nominate any individuals whom they think deserve to be honoured in this very special way.”

To visit the hall of fame, to view the selection criteria and to download the nomination form, visit www.sportborders.org.uk/hall-of-fame.html.   Nomination forms are also available from any Council library, museum, public building, leisure centre or on request from the Sports Development Unit—Tel: 01896 756274
