  SCOTTISH BORDERS RUGBY
            YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS
“HELPING TO KICK CANCER INTO TOUCH”

On Friday 19th June 2009 at 7.45 a group of 10 Rugby youth development officers from the Borders went on a marathon sponsored goal kicking challenge starting at Berwick before moving onto Duns, Kelso, Jed, Langholm  and Hawick. After a short lunch break they then moved onto Melrose, Gala and Selkirk before finishing at Peebles 200 miles and 9 hours later. Each YDO took 3 goal kicks at each ground these were worth a total of 10 points. 5 points for a successful kick from within 5metres from the touch line, 3 points from within 15metres from the touch line, and 2 points from in front of the posts. Chris Paterson can relax as none of them will challenge him as the most consistent goal kicker in the World! Each goal kicker could have scored a total of 100 points therefore the maximum total scored by the 10 goal kickers would have be 1000 points, wishful thinking. The total of points scored was just below 50% with the top scorer being Greg Walker of Jed. (picture below)

The good news is that over £1200 has been raised and will be shared between the Cancer Unit at Borders General Hospital & the Lavender Touch Charity. Thanks to everyone who supported or sponsored these two very worth while charities. And well done to all the Development officers for given up their time to take part in what was a great fun event, to Iain Heard SRU Referee Manager who made sure there was no cheating and Brian Renwick SRU Regional Development Manger who came in a late replacement and finished in the top 3. The first coaching update for next season will be a goal kicking session. If you would like to donate or would like more information on the Lavender Touch log on to www.lavendertouch.co.uk  or on the Cancer Unit at the Borders General Hospital contact Claire.oliver@border.scot.nhs.uk.
