Both Kirsty Paterson, 16, of Duns Amateur Swimming Club and Lucy Hope, 12, of Kelso ASC will travel to Sheffield for the competition.
Borders Performance Coach Alex Jordan said: “Kirsty and Lucy really deserve their selection on this team after all the hard work they’ve put in. Both girls train frequently each week and their results reflected this last season. It’s these results which have led to the girls’ selection.” Jordan is also the coach of Swim Team Borders, a performance squad providing extra training to Borders club swimmers five mornings each week at the Selkirk Leisure Centre.
In season 2008/2009 Paterson claimed double silver at the Scottish Schools Championships in January in the 100m Butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley. In April, Kirsty won bronze in the 200m Breaststroke at the Scottish Age Group Championships. She also mounted the podium twice at the East District Age Group Championships in March, winning silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
Hope also had a successful 2008/2009 season. She took gold in the 50m Backstroke at the Scottish Schools Championships with a Scottish Schools Record. The performance earned her the 12 and Under Girls Best Performance Trophy. Lucy also broke the East District long course 50m backstroke record in June and, more recently, narrowly missed a place in the 200m backstroke final at the Biritish Age Group Championships.
Both swimmers currently receive support from Scottish Borders Council’s Athlete Support Programme.
