STREET NIGHT KICKS OFF IN KELSO

Secondary school aged youngsters are being given the opportunity to take part in a free-of-charge football, rugby and dance as part of ‘Street Night’ which takes place in Kelso from next Friday (28 May).

The events will be held every Friday night for four weeks from 28 May from 7pm till 9pm.  The first night takes place at the Abbey Row Car Park in Kelso.  The following three nights (4, 11 and 18 June) take place at the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) at Kelso High School.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education Councillor Graham Garvie is keen for youngsters to take part: “Street night is really about having fun. There is no specialised coaching involved and it is really informal, which makes the sessions as enjoyable and inclusive as possible. The street nights that have been held so far have been a big success - so we are really pleased to be able to give more youngsters the opportunity to take part.”

‘Street Night’ is a partnership between Scottish Borders Council (SBC), the Scottish Football Association (SFA), Scottish Rugby and the Scottish Borders Community Safety Partnership.

It aims to provide youngsters with the opportunity to get involved in physical activity on Friday nights instead of being bored on the streets.  It is part of the Scottish Government’s Cashback for Communities scheme which benefits youngsters by reinvesting proceeds of crime back into community to allow them the best opportunity to follow a positive and rewarding future away from anti-social behaviour.

Youngsters can just turn up on the night or complete an application form. More information is available from the sports development unit on 01896 756274 or email nrenton@scotborders.gov.uk
