CLEGG TAKES GOLD FOR BRITAIN

The BT Paralympic World Cup opened in Manchester yesterday with a greeting from the Prime Minister but it was a Clegg, not a Cameron, who most boosted national pride in the athletics contest that kicked off a week-long festival of sport.

lIBBY cLEGGLibby Clegg, a 20-year-old sprinter from the Scottish borders, won Great Britain’s first gold in the eleventh event of the day, the 100 metres for the visually impaired, to the delight of 5,500 spectators, among them schoolchildren who had come from as far away as Somerset.
Clegg has had Stargardt’s macular dystrophy since she was 9, a condition she shares with two of her three siblings, which means that she has only slight peripheral vision in her left eye, none in her right and has to run with a guide. She powered through in 13.25sec to pip the unguided Eva Ngui, of Spain
