The Tour of Heriot involved pupils, staff, parents and members of the wider community and is the culmination of a longer term enterprise and cycling project at the school based on the Tour de France.
The children have been taking part in coaching sessions with Scottish Cycling to prepare for the event which involved similar stages of the Tour de France including flat stages, hill stages and time trials. As part of their training, the children were taught how to ride safely as part of a team and learned different race tactics including slipstreaming, cornering, overtaking and sprinting. The pupils also designed a T-shirt to commemorate the event which can also be bought to help raise funds.

Class Teacher, Fiona Hanlin will be helping the Road Rippers achieve their target of £2000 by cycling from Lands’ End to John O’ Groats in the summer. She said: “As well as linking in with the Tour de France topic which the children have been researching over the last few months, the cycle also aimed to promote sustainable transport and a healthy lifestyle within our local community. We really enjoyed the day and are considering making the Tour an annual event”
David Winton the East Region Cycling Development Coach from Scottish Cycling added: “Working with the riders of Heriot Road Rippers has been a coaches’ dream. During our first session the riders identified the skills required for racing the Tour de France and this formed the basis of the coaching plan for the following sessions. The riders have improved their fitness and confidence on the bikes as well as their skills. They are all now enjoying riding their bikes with some even commuting to school. The young riders will have a chance to test their new race skills at the Peebles Cycling Club Dirt Crit Races starting on Thursday 3 June.”
Scottish Borders Council’s (SBC) Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Learning, Councillor Graham Garvie said: “This is an inspirational project which ties into many areas of development for the youngsters including learning more about the sport of cycling which is steadily gaining momentum in the Borders. I would like to congratulate the youngsters on completing the tour and would urge members of the public to make a donation to support them.”
