As part of a national programme to grow the game of rugby across the country, Galashiels Academy were rewarded with training kit to help them develop their rugby skills after the school met the participation criteria set by Scottish Rugby and achieving Gold Standard.
Rugby is continued to be offered as part of the curriculum at Galashiels Academy who offer coaching sessions to all at S1/2, U15, and Senior levels. Furthermore they have entered sides in the U15 and U18 Brewin Dolphin Schools Cup tournaments, as well as forging strong links with local clubs through the Gala Rugby Youth Development Officer.
The Rugby Champions programme aims to increase the number and amount of rugby played in state secondary schools while rewarding the dedicated school teachers and parents who give up their spare time to take extra-curricular rugby.
Mr. Neil Brown of the P.E. Dept and the Schools Rugby Champion, said:
“The new kit has proved to be a real boost to the school and “Offering new equipment to schools is a great way to not only get kids into rugby but get kids active.”
Some of the senior school pupils are also involved in the coaching and refereeing.
Rugby Champions ambassador and Scotland international, Ally Hogg, said: “This initiative is a fantastic way of getting kids involved in sport from an early age and will not only benefit Scottish rugby but the whole of Scotland by encouraging more young people to be fit and active.
“It’s great to see Scottish Rugby giving its full support to school volunteers which will result in the creation of more rugby opportunities for Scotland’s state school children.”
Colin Thomson, Head of Community Rugby, added: “Scottish Rugby see the project as a key contributor in achieving our growth targets for 2012 and expect the initiative to take the number of Scottish state schools playing rugby from the 184 to 300 over the next three years.
“This programme underlines Scottish Rugby’s objectives to ensure that rugby is open and available to all, while greatly contributing towards our strategic targets of a 38% increase in young people playing rugby, and a total playing population of 38,000 by 2012.”
