UKA are working in partnership with England Netball and Gymnastics England to offer 150 young people (aged 16-19) the opportunity to attend a four day residential Young Leaders Camp. The camp is taking place at Bradfield College, in Berkshire from Sunday 15th August – Wednesday 18th August 2010 and will focus upon the development of leadership skills through sport, offering a good blend of practical and interactive theory-based sessions.
The event will be run by staff from the three sports, with the programme offering a range of workshops including coaching and officiating, media, personal development planning, leadership, club / event management and much more! There will also be time built in for relaxation and evening social activities, co-ordinated by trained staff.
To be eligible, leaders have met and exceeded the following criteria:
• 16-19yrs old at the time of the camp
• Actively volunteering in athletics within an affiliated club / school / college
• Have obtained a Coaching or Officiating award.
• Enthusiastic, motivated and committed to developing your skills and experience
Three young volunteers from across Scotland have been selected to attend the Young Leaders Camp at Bradfield College in Berkshire. These young leaders have demonstrated over a number of year that they are dedicated to promoting sport and help others enjoy sport in their local area.
Shoni Tavendale of Perth Starthtay Harriers is a Level 2 athletics coach and has help the club throughout the past two years. In this time Shoni and many of her family have become heavily involved in the structure, helping the young people in the Perth area enjoy the sport. Shoni was identified by Alasdair Donaldson when he was the Tayside and Fife Regional Development Manager for Athletics as an enthusiastic and dedicated individual who could offer much to athletics.
John Robertson of Whitemoss AAC has obtained his Level 1 UKA award and Trampoline Level 1 award. John has been a member of the club from Primary age and as an athlete has competed from grassroots activities through to being a member of the West Coast Inter Regional team. John has volunteered for many roles over the past two years, helping in the delivery of the Grand Prix Open Graded meeting in 2008 and the Golden League in 2009, both held at East Kilbride. John has also be volunteering with South Lanarkshire Leisure, delivering both athletics and trampoline activities in schools and local leisure centres.
Lee Goodfellow of Tweed Leader Jed Track Club has been a volunteer for a number of years and has worked with the club to help local athletes participate in athletics.
John Robertson said, “I am very excited about the opportunity I have been given to attend the Young Leaders Camp 2010 with UK athletics. It will be a great chance to meet other young coaches and learn about their experiences in the sport.
At present I am a level 1 coach with Whitemoss AAC and also have worked closely with Jim Goldie and South Lanarkshire council to help promote and develop athletics in this area. I really enjoy doing this so I am delighted to be given the opportunity to develop my coaching skills at the YLC and hope to be able to bring some good ideas back to the club.
I am also a level 1 trampoline coach and start my level 2 course very soon so hopefully the skills I gain at the camp will help develop my ability as a coach in both sports.
It is a tremendous honour to be chosen to attend the camp and I would like to thank Whitemoss AAC for nominating me.”
Lee Goodfellow said, “It’s a great honour to be selected for this and to be only one of three Scots on the camp.
The camp will be a great opportunity to meet other people, learn from other sports and other people in athletics from all across the UK.
I hope to be able pick up some new ideas on the camp and then bring them back to share with younger athletes and coaches at my Club, Tweed Leader Jed Track.”
