Borders Under-13s team retain the Eastern Region Inter Area Cricket Championship

2011 brought a change to the format of the U-13 Inter Area Championships where each team played each on a home and away basis and culminated in a four day festival of cricket after which the Borders were crowned undefeated champions.

The first round of games in June were lost to the weather but the Borders got their campaign off to a winning start with a very close game against Pentlands on 3rd July at St Boswells. After winning the toss Pentlands chose to bat and got off to solid start as their top four all got into double figures. Cockburn top scored with 49 before the Borders bowling attack gained momentum and got their side back into the game. Duncan Sim (Manderston), Jack Halls (Gala), Henry Adams (Biggar) and Rory Brand (Gala) were all amongst the wickets. Brand in his first representative game took 3 for 32. The Pentlands total finished on 159 which was always going to be a challenge for the home side.

After a shaky start where the majority of the top and middle order failed to make an impact, Jack Savage (Bigger) built a magnificent innings of 61 which was the cornerstone of the victory. Robbie Thomson (Kelso) was also influential scoring a hard hitting 30 not out securing the match with only four balls and one wicket remaining. Pentlands, who pull players from a number of the top Scottish clubs, were always going to be the main challengers and so this victory was a significant boost to the Borders campaign.

The Borders then entertained North Edinburgh & East Lothian in a rain affected game at Selkirk on 17th July. Stand in captain Henry Adams on winning the toss asked the visitors to bat and the openers put on a 49 partnership before the Borders bowlers, Sim, Angus Roberts (Kelso), Will Thomson (Kelso) and Adams all took wickets and restricted the visitors to 93 from their 25 overs.

In reply the Borders batsmen got off to a fine start with Sim, Will Thomson and Roberts all getting into double figures. A mini collapse in the middle of the innings allowed the away team back into the game until Adams and Ryan Legge (Gala) held their nerve to secure the game in the last over to maintain their unbeaten record.

These two victories put the Borders top of the championship table leading into the festival starting on 25th July.

On Monday the Borders welcomed Forth Valley to Gala CC. The Borders were asked to bat first and got off to the best possible start with Will Thomson, Jack Savage, Fergus Godfrey-Faussett (Melrose) and Duncan Sim all scoring heavily allowing the home side to build a formidable total of 183 in their 40 overs.

This was always going to be a very tough challenge for the visitors but a magnificent innings of 97 not out by Forth Valley opener Euan Daltry brought his team ever closer to victory. The home team and supporters were feeling the pressure as Daltry and his lower order edged ever closer but excellent fielding and a return to the bowling attack of Ryan Johnston (Hawick) who took two vital wickets ensured that Forth Valley fell 30 runs short and maintained the Borders at the top of the table.

On Tuesday Borders travelled to Meggetland where Pentlands were the hosts. Returning captain Jack Halls elected to bat on winning the toss and after losing Godfrey-Faussett and Savage cheaply, he, Will Thomson and Henry Adams all got into the 30’s and built a team total of 140 which given the conditions was probably 30 runs below par.

Undeterred by their low total the Borders bowlers set about their task with great accuracy and spirit. Sim, Ronan Alexander (Hawick) and Ryan Johnston all bowled very tight spells which built pressure on the home team. Sim took 3 for 17 and Johnston had the excellent figures of 3 for 13 from his 8 overs. Despite being 38 for 5 and apparently beaten, the home batsmen, Brown and Arvind, had others ideas and put on a 62 run partnership which got their team back into the game. Outstanding catches by the Borders, Robbie Thomson, Henry Adams and Rory Brand and excellent all round fielding ensured that the Pentlands batsmen had to take some chances to secure victory. They managed to get to within two runs of a win when captain Halls brought the field in an inviting the batsmen to force the ball over the top. This resulted in a mistimed shot which went straight to Savage who delivered an accurate throw into the keeper Robbie Irvine (Gala) who, with the batsman bearing down on him remained calm and whipped the bails of the secure a much deserved victory for the Borders.

This win meant that the Borders remained at the top of the championship table with 9 points and one game to go and couldn’t be caught by the other teams.

Manager and coach Stevie Halls and Ross Paterson were delighted with this but decided to keep the news from the players in the hope they would remain focussed on the following day’s game against North Edinburgh & East Lothian.

Overnight the news of the championship victory slipped out and facebook and texts ensured the squad turned up at a sun drenched Pinkie in Musselburgh on Wednesday in buoyant mood. Despite the high spirits the team performed very professionally bowling their opponents out for 43. Duncan Sim and Ryan Johnston continued their excellent bowling throughout the week taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively and Will Thomson finished the home side off with 3 wickets in 5 balls for 0 runs.

Thomson then opened the batting and smashed the ball to all parts with a quick fire 26 not out and along with Halls finished the game off. The Borders therefore won the championship being undefeated.

At the conclusion of Wednesday’s game an impromptu 10 over game was arranged against north Edinburgh and East Lothian which allowed some practice for the final day of the festival which was a T20 format.

In a change to the Borders batting order Rory Brand opened up the innings and produced an outstanding display of hard hitting to score a quick fire 31. Robbie Irvine also contributed with a skilful 19 and helped the Borders reach a formidable total of 80 from their 10 overs.

In reply North Edinburgh & East Lothian were treated to an over each from all of the Borders players. Robbie Irvine who normally keeps wicket took 2 wickets for 2 runs in his over and although the home side got within 10 runs of the Borders total most of this was due to the very attacking field of 4 slips and a gully set for the majority of the innings.

The Borders team celebrated their well deserved championship victory with a display of the world famous “Swanny Spinkler” dance and n equally world famous Luca’s ice cream.

Unfortunately the T20 day at Goldenacre of Thursday was stopped short due to rain but this did not take the shine off the week for the Borders who were presented with the trophy by organiser and local development manager Neil Cameron.

This victory was an outstanding performance by the whole squad everyone of whom produced their best throughout the games and ensured the Borders remain a significant force in junior cricket in Scotland.
