B.E.S.T Compete at British Swimming Age Group Championships

Two members of the Borders Elite Swim Team (B.E.S.T) were recently in action at the British Age Group Championships for the first time.

Ryan Brown and Kirsty Armstrong, both from Kelso ASC, travelled to the meet in Sheffield to compete against Britain’s best from the 21st to the 25th of July.

In a near floorless performance Armstrong won silver in the 400m Individual Medley on the final day of the competition. She achieved a significant PB and broke the Scottish Age Group Record for the event by 2.5 seconds.

Earlier in the meet, Armstrong broke the Scottish Age Group Record in the 200m Individual Medley also when she placed fourth. Showing her versatility, Kirsty contested several finals throughout the competition gaining 5th and 6th positions also. She claimed, at this meet, her final 4 of fifteen individual Scottish East District Age Group records for the season.

Ryan Brown also performed extremely well at this competition. He had one swim, only one chance, and he made the most of it. Having achieved a PB every time he's contested the 200m butterfly event this season he was determined to keep it going at the final and most important meet of the season. Indeed, he recorded yet another PB, dealing expertly with the pressure of his first British Age Group Championships.

Five more members of B.E.S.T. were also in action at the British Youth Championships the following week. Jessica and Scott Wilcox, Rebekah Wilson, Lucy Hope & Amy Fraser contested a range of events at the competition in Sheffield from 27th to 31st July.

All 7 swimmers receive support from SBC’s Athlete Support Programme except Armstrong, who is currently too young but has been earmarked for future support.
