To celebrate the year of Active Scotland, the Scottish Canoe Association today announced a programme of low cost introductory canoeing and kayaking sessions, supported by sportscotland. During two weekends in October (8-9 and 15-16 October), up to 400 adults who have never tried the sport before will have the opportunity to experience canoeing and kayaking at centres throughout Scotland.
The year of Active Scotland is about getting everyone to appreciate that they can get active right on their own doorstep and to showcase the wealth of activities that Scotland has to offer, including canoeing. Over 1.2 million people in the UK already take part in canoeing at least once a week and through subsidised half-day sessions newcomers will be able to discover the excitement for themselves in a safe and managed environment. Stuart Smith, Chief Executive, Scottish Canoe Association said: “We’re delighted to be able to contribute to the year of Active Scotland. Canoeing is a great sport that allows anyone to get up close to the beautiful rivers, lochs and the sea in Scotland. It appeals to everyone from those wanting a gentle paddle across a calm loch, to those with ambitions of standing on an Olympic podium.”
Sheena Carroll, Partnership Manager, sportscotland said: “Through initiatives like Year of Active Scotland, we want to help motivate the nation to make sport a way of life. Here in Scotland we have a world class setting for outdoor sport and this is a fantastic opportunity for people to try a new activity they might never have thought of before. By offering these introductory sessions, we hope people will enjoy the experience and be inspired to take up the sport by joining the Scottish Canoe Association and their local club.”
With 11 centres from Ballachulish in the Highlands to Loch Ken in Dumfries and Galloway taking part, there really is something for everyone in some of the most scenic parts of Scotland. Sessions are only £7.50 per person and participants can book through the Scottish Canoe Association’s website at www.canoescotland.org. No previous experience is required and the website gives full details about where to take part and what participants can expect.
