This Easter, Cricket Scotland in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council is running cricket camps for all ages and abilities.
Cricket Scotland’s Head of Performance will deliver a session on “developing young players for the modern game”. The session will be an interactive combination of practical and theory based activities. The workshop is designed to help Coaches deliver sessions on topics such as aggressive batting and bowling techniques and dynamic fielding. It will also consider the integration of physical and mental skills into technical sessions. The session is also designed to be attractive to young players who may have an interest in coaching.
Andy Lawrie, former Falkirk footballer has been recruited by the education department as the new Coaching Network Development Officer.
The Borders Swimming Performance Development Programme has already had a huge impact on the sport since it was introduced last summer.
The programme commenced in June 2008 with the appointment of the new Borders High Performance Development Coach Alex Jordan – a top class swimming coach from Australia.
Diversionary programmes to encourage youngsters to get involved in sport on Friday and Saturday nights are becoming increasingly popular among youths in the Borders.
‘Street Night’ in Hawick provides free games of five-a-side football and tag rugby as part of the Scottish Government’s Cashback for Communities scheme.
Following a successful 4-week pilot in November last year, the programme secured funding to provide a 14 week programme from January to April 2009. Now the scheme is in full swing it attracts over 70 youngsters every week.

The Community Development Team has identified that the development of the girls and women’s game as one of the top priorities for 2009 and onwards. As a result of increased funding from the ICC, Cricket Scotland are now recruiting a dynamic and inspirational Development Officer to drive forward this aspect of our programme.
Cricket Scotland is pleased to announce the next scheduled intake of Cricket Development Apprentices (SVQ). This is the third intake since the inauguration of the scheme in 2007 and we look forward to further expanding the programme. The two year full time programme is designed to give participants experience of organising and delivering cricket coaching in their local communities while undertaking development and training activities which will prepare the participant for a potential career in sports or cricket development. We are currently inviting applications from young people and organisations who are interested in joining the programme for the 2009 intake.
