SCTS

Scottish Cycle Training Scheme

The Scottish Cycle Training Scheme (SCTS), is offered to all P6/7 pupils throughout Scotland. Active Schools works closely with the local Road Safety officers to support the delivery of the SCTS to Borders schools.

Active Schools are looking to promote safe travel to and from school the SCTS is an excellent programme to ensure primary pupils have the knowledge and understanding to travle safely on the road with their bikes. Active Schools Coordinators are all fully trained to educate adult volunteer trainers to deliver the programme and have also been trained to check bikes and assess pupil compentency and knowledge of road cycling.

To find out if their is a SCTS running in your child school, check out the whats on pages in the Cluster Pages.

The scheme is designed to give pupils the skills and knowledge they need to ride safely and sensibly on the road and thus help reduce the significant numbers of child cyclists involved in road accidents. The students learn a variety of manoeuvres on and/or off-road, complemented by cycling theory in the classroom.

The cyclists learn basic control exercises, emergency stop, right and left turns from minor to major and major to minor roads. All of these exercises include observation and signalling skills and a general awareness of traffic. The classroom based work covers the highway code, bike maintenance, journeying and environmental awareness. Pupils are either continually assessed on their progress throughout the course or undergo a test at the end. The scheme is linked to the National Curriculum Framework.

The programmes relies upon adult volunteers to deliver the training elements to the pupils. Full training and support is offered from the Active Schools Coordinators. Volunteers will deliver the playground and road based training to pupils over a set number of sessions, while the bike checks and the assesment will be lead by either ASC's or Road Safety Officers.

If you would like to get involved in a local cycle programme contact your local Active Schools Coordinator.
